Get ready for Berlin at its most unkempt and bohemian; a part of former East Berlin, whose low rents and central location have given it Berlin's most happening bar and nightlife scene.

Including the impressive Jewish Museum and places for wandering between café-bars, art galleries and clothes shops along its main street which caters for punks, old hippies and students and immigrant community, Look out for lots of Turkish street vendors and a wealth of south-eastern European cuisine.

It is full of many preserved East Berlin buildings, making it a must for anyone interested in GDR vintage and a great stepping-stone to some intriguing attractions, particularly the final resting place of thousands of Russians who died in the Battle of Berlin, and Berlin's most important Jewish graveyard at Weissensee.
