Also known as the Iron Curtain, the Berlin Wall was the well known barrier constructed by the German Democratic Republic to cut off West Berlin from East Berlin and East Germany during the post World War II era. Those who were brave enough to attempt an escape were either shot dead or severely injured. Guards of the time were instructed that those who attempted to escape were criminals and needed to be shot. The death toll added up to the hundreds which led to the wall being later nicknamed the Death Strip. The people of East Germany went to great lengths to escape from the enslavement and emigrate to the West such as digging tunnels under the wall, taking hot air balloons when the winds were in their favor and even driving cars at full speed through the wall!

At this most famous German tourist attraction you will be hit hard emotionally seeing the remains of the structure which played such an important role in European history. The wall serves as a grim reminder of the unfortunate families who were separated, killed and tried so desperately to escape the troubled hold over Germany. This is really an amazing piece of history! Don't miss out on the wall museum and observation tower where you can see pictures, artifacts and historical documents from the era. You can also listen to guides retell inspiring stories about the fighters who attempted to rebel against the barrier, some lucky and others not so lucky. This is definitely a must see attraction for any tourist visiting Germany, very moving.
