This brilliant museum, part of
Museum Island is like five museums in one with its outstanding variety of collections. Situated in central Berlin, close to
Pergamon Museum,
Alte Nationalgalerie and
Alexanderplatz, the building was damaged during World War II and thanks to the amazing architect David Chipperfield has been restored better than ever. Today the museum houses the ever popular Egyptian Museum, Papyrus collection and the Museum of Prehistory and Early History along with many other fine collections ranging from the Paleolithic period to the High Middle Ages. The exhibits from the museum of Prehistory and Early History are famous throughout the world, some tourists, mainly archaeologists visit Berlin for this reason alone. The museum has many fantastic highlights such as the skull of Neanderthal from Le Moustier and the world renowned bust of Nefertiti.
The Egyptian Museum owns one of the world's most remarkable collections of Ancient Egyptian Art and also one of the many reasons Neues Museum is known all over the world. One of the most famous works is of course the bust of Queen Nefertiti, whose original color amazingly still suffices today without any work whatsoever being done to the piece. The portrait of Queen Tiy and the Berlin Green Head are also some timeless classics the museum holds. You cannot help but be in total awe of the beauty of some of these pieces, even if you are not an art fan! The museum of Prehistory and Early History's highlights include items dating way back to the Bronze Age such as the Berlin Gold Hat, the Trojan Collection and a wealth of objects from the Merovigngian dynasty. As the museum is one of the most popular in Berlin, special exhibits are held regularly so keep an eye on the events calendar. One particular amazing exhibit being held this year is Amarna 2012 which marks the discovery of the bust of Nefertiti 100 years ago. The museum will be held in the museum and focus on the Amarna period with never before seen discoveries from collections of the Berlin museums. Well worth a visit, this museum should be top of the list for museum buffs.
