Often referred to as the German rival of Versailles, Sanssouci Castle is the spectacular former summer palace of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. The 18th century palace is a large single story villa with King Frederick's personal taste in design and decoration, who knew a king could have such magnificent taste! The King loved the palace so much he branded it as a place that would die with him. The palace itself, a former orchard is surrounded by hundreds of acres of park and a fountain to die for. The name Sanssouci literally translates in to without worry, which pretty much sums up this peaceful abode. There is a rich history behind the palace and park which you can hear about through the audio tour, all the better so you can roam freely through the beautiful surroundings.
With only a modest twelve rooms it is small compared to the great Versailles, but do not underestimate the palaces exquisite architecture. The palace is lined with beautifully crafted golden statues and columns, a museum, semicircular colonnades, a Chinese tea house and a stunning gazebo. The palace is noted for its Rococo style and the many temples and follies in the park. King Frederick's personal taste was held in such high regard it was later characterized as Frederician Rococo. The palace is just a short trip outside the city center and well worth the time. The unique abode will have you craving more historic architecture with its incredible design, and the peaceful gardens are perfect for exploring Berlin's natural beauty as well as escaping the rush of the city center for a couple of hours.
